When choosing a kayak it’s important to think about where you’ll paddle, how long you’ll be out, and what kind of experience you’re after. 1. Kayak Type & Intended Use
Recreational kayaks – stable, easy to get in and out of, and ideal for calm lakes and casual outings.
Touring kayaks – longer and more efficient, built for covering distance and handling open water.
Sit-on-top kayaks – open design, easy to use, great for warm weather and fishing.
Fishing kayaks – wider, highly stable, and outfitted with features like rod holders, high/low seats, and sometimes pedal drives.
2. Kayak Materials & Weight
Polyethylene – durable, impact-resistant, and budget-friendly.
Thermoformed – lighter and stiffer than polyethylene, with a sleeker finish.
Inflatable – lightweight, packable, and easy to store or transport, with surprisingly good durability for many recreational uses.
3. Length & Stability
Short kayaks (8–12 ft) – highly maneuverable and easy to transport, ideal for smaller water and beginners.
Medium kayaks (12–14 ft) – a balance of stability, speed, and tracking.
Long kayaks (14+ ft) – faster, better tracking and more efficient for longer distances and open water.
4. Cockpit Fit & Comfort
A proper fit makes a big difference. Look for adjustable foot braces, supportive backrests, and thigh contact that gives you control without feeling cramped. Sit-in kayaks offer more protection from the elements, while sit-on-top designs prioritize ease of use and freedom of movement.
5. Transport
Think about how you’ll get your kayak to the water. Roof rack systems with J-cradle or saddle accessories are the most secure option for transport, though foam blocks can work for shorter trips. Kayak carts make it easy to get your boat down to the water if you're not sure about carrying it.
