Paddle boarding: anyone can do it

Paddle boarding: anyone can do it

Ok.  Let's admit it. There are some of us who aren't sure we can handle a stand up paddle board, and don't want to look like a goof falling off it in front of a group of onlookers.  It looks like so much fun, but you know...

This picture is of a four year old trying a SUP for the first time.  There is a video of it on our video page - check it out here.  The board is a Blend, made by Starboard, and is one of the rental boards from our Shop in Saskatoon.  We also sell these in the store.  It's an adult board, so you can see that he doesn't have the mass to even keep the fin in the water, but he is able to stand comfortably and paddle it in a relatively straight line.

The point of this?  To show you that YES!  You CAN stand up paddleboard, no matter how uncoordinated you might think you are.  All you need to remember is to keep your weight in the middle of the board.  Start by kneeling, with each of your knees on either side of the carry handle hole in the middle.  Hold your paddle in the middle of the shaft and paddle that way, until you feel confident enough to try standing.  It's really not as tippy as you might think.

Of course, it helps if you have a sunny, flat calm beachfront lake, with nobody watching.

Once you get comfortable, go ahead and take a friend out with you (human, canine, what have you).   Before you know it, you'll be the most popular person at the beach.
