Snowshoes
Modern style snowshoes are made of synthetic materials and may have metal frames. Bindings strap on to most sizes of footwear and work best with hiking style boots or winter boots that are not too large. Traditional snowshoes are wood-framed and typically larger, offering the best flotation but requiring a wider stance while striding.
Traction is offered by crampons under the foot (modern styles) and sometimes by the frame or deck design.
The larger the snowshoe the more flotation it offers, so consider the terrain you will be traversing. Soft loose snow will require a larger snowshoe than a packed trail. Snowshoes are sized by user mass, which includes a pack if you plan to carry one. Women's snowshoes are typically narrower at the back to accommodate a slightly different stride.
