A major trend these days is simplification - we don't want to own as much stuff as we do. Getting rid of excess and purging your life of the unnecessary is easier said than done, and for those of us suffering from GAS (see an earlier blog post) it can be a real ordeal.
One of the ways for us gear freaks to simplify our lives is to own items that function in more than one area of our life. Why own three backpacks when you can get one that you can use for the office, school, air travel and day-hiking? Here's some fall appropriate gear that is useful both in urban environments and on your next outdoor adventure.
Mountainsmith Approach 40 backpack This 40L pack does it all. It's a perfect carry-on size and zips wide open like a suitcase for travel, yet has a technical suspension system worthy of hard scrambles. There is a sleeve and hole for your hydration system. For use in urban environments it's got a lot of zipped and mesh pockets, and laptop and pen sleeves. And it only weighs 2lbs 12oz, a lot less than your typical carry-on suitcase. $143
BioLite PowerLight This three-in-one powerbank, lantern and flashlight is handy anywhere. Whether you keep it in your car or home it is perfect for lighting up your tent on trips. You can string extra lights up to it for an instant patio party. It can be recharged via any USB source and can power your USB chargeable electronics off grid. One of the coolest gadgets out there! $95
Sea to Summit Alpha Light cutlery set Made of ultralight hard anodized aluminum, this cutlery set weighs nothing in your pack or your lunchbox. Why not carry the principles of lightweight backpacking into your everyday life? The set even comes with a handy biner to keep them all together. $22
Icebreaker Helix Vest In women's and men's. Add some merino wool warmth and dress up your urban style with a piece that can also be used for cold weather activities. Dressy enough to layer over office wear, you can wear this for winter running or layer it under a shell for cross country skiing or snowshoeing. Great for apres ski wear. $220
Innate Tiffin Vacuum Food Container Keeps your food hot or cold for hours. Pack it with hot soup for your after ski meal or use it for your office lunches. Sturdy, durable and made of high quality stainless steel. Fits nicely into side mesh pockets of almost any backpack. $22.50
Outdoor Research Radar Pocket Cap Stylish and functional, this unisex cap scrunches up into a pocket so you can take it anywhere. The brim is creased so it doesn't get kinked. Handy for kid's soccer games, after work beers on the patio, or an afternoon ascent up a nearby mountain. With UPF+50 protection you're covered no matter where you are, and looking good while you're at it. $30
Looking at the above picture, Suncloud sunglasses are also a great multi-purpose essential. All of them are polarized so they are great for water sports where you need to be able to cut the glare and see into the water. And we've got all kinds of frame and lens styles and colours - from aviators to retro models to frameless sport glasses. Something for everyone! $60
